Data-Driven Digital Twin for Sustainable and Resilient Maritime Infrastructure in Ports
Seaports are crucial to global trade and must embrace digital innovation to meet Europe's sustainability and efficiency targets. Despite growing digitalisation efforts, the digital landscape within many current ports remains fragmented and reactive. This is primarily due to legacy infrastructure, siloed data environments, and the lack of integrated digital frameworks ready for regulatory compliance. As a result, critical gaps persist in deploying explainable machine learning for decision-making, ensuring cybersecurity resilience, and GDPR compliance, hindering both operational efficiency and maritime resilience.
TwinPort is a cutting-edge project that aligns with both European and Maltese digitalization and sustainability efforts, focusing on next-generation port operations. By integrating real-time data and models from port infrastructure and ships into a port digital twin, TwinPort provides an ongoing monitoring platform for improved predictive capability and optimal control. The port digital twin platform facilitates decision-making in areas such as energy and logistics through the utilisation of XML-based algorithms, providing human operators with transparent information to enhance energy usage, vessel scheduling, and operational safety. The interdisciplinary approach combines siloed port systems into intelligent and resilient ecosystems, with expected TwinPort results including an operational digital twin prototype, improved metrics of port performance ranging from energy savings to faster and more efficient decision-making processes along with guidelines for replication.
