Digital Arts

Research Methods in Art and Design
UG
The study-unit introduces various approaches to practice-based research including aspects that integrate sustainable and ecological considerations within art and design practice.
Contemporary Image Making
UG
Environmental sustainability is one of the major debates in contemporary sociology. In addition, artists address the ecological crisis and the dangers of unsustainable societies in various ways (example: Edward Burtynsky). The Environment (and Sustainability) is one topic students can choose for their project (comprising 40% of the final mark). From a practical standpoint, students no longer hand in hard copies of assignments; instead, they submit them through Turnitin.
Introduction to Illustration
UG
Artistic critiques of environment and landscapes and use of digital media.
History of Photography
UG
Material delivered digitally on TV screen via Pdf and Video presentations.
Contemporary Art Photography
UG
Most of the topics taught in this unit deal with the use of digital photography.
Storyboarding and Sequential Art
UG
Environmental themes and use of digital media.
Intermedia Studio 2
UG
In my Practical Study Units (DGA200, DGA1023) some students do investigate sustainability or engage in practices that are sensitive to issues regarding sustainability. Whilst these are encouraged, they are not a requirement. When it comes to materials and process I do tend to offer alternatives that are more sustainable - for a number of reasons in terms of financial sustainability, explaining the trade off, ecological sustainability, why some materials can be unsustainable for long term use and their detrimental effects on the environment as well as other motives/reasons. One may say that sustainability is embedded through hands-on exploration of materials and processes with a focus on responsible resource use (with various underlying motivations). In the study units I lecture, students may engage with the notion of sustainable materials, experiment with waste reduction techniques (often for financial reasons), and reflect on the environmental impact of different production methods. Lifecycle thinking is integrated into projects where this is relevant, encouraging students to consider durability, recyclability, and circular economy principles. This is, however, not an integral part of any study-unit I lecture.

Editorial Design
UG
The study unit addresses environmental sustainability through discussions on responsible material choices and production methods. Students explore the differences between FSC-certified and recycled paper, considering their environmental impact. The unit also examines strategies to reduce paper waste, such as efficient layouts and minimal printing. Additionally, students learn about alternative inks with lower ecological footprints and the benefits of digital artwork and applications in reducing resource consumption. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to incorporate sustainable practices in their projects, fostering awareness of how editorial design can contribute to a more environmentally responsible creative industry.
Intermedia Studio 4
UG
The study-unit explores diverse approaches to engaging with a specific theme through various media with a strong emphasis on sustainability. It encourages the use of eco-friendly, organic and sustainable materials, reclaimed and repurposed materials, waste reduction, and digital media.
Applied Photography 1
UG
Practice assignments and written text delivered on VLE in digital format.
Applied Photography 2
UG
My lectures in fashion photography emphasise how the medium serves as a powerful form of social commentary, particularly in addressing issues such as sustainability. Through visual storytelling, ethical production choices, and conscious styling, fashion photography can challenge fast fashion, promote sustainable practices, and raise awareness about environmental and social responsibility in the industry. By encouraging critical thinking and creative expression, I guide my students to use their lenses not just to capture beauty but to advocate for meaningful change.
Brand Identity and Packaging Design
UG
The Branding and Packaging study unit integrates environmental sustainability by rethinking traditional packaging strategies. Students explore ways to reduce or eliminate secondary packaging while ensuring clear brand communication and product identification. The unit also introduces alternative brand identity elements as sustainable touchpoints, shifting focus beyond excessive materials. Additionally, students critically examine how branding can incorporate sustainability as a core value, influencing consumer perceptions and purchasing decisions. By redefining branding through an ecological lens, the course encourages students to develop packaging solutions that balance functionality, aesthetics, and environmental responsibility, shaping a more sustainable future for brand communication.

Media & Communications

Magazine and Digital Publishing
UG
The study unit equips students with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to create effective visual communication, with a strong emphasis on sustainability as per EMAS guidelines. Students are encouraged to critically assess the environmental impact of their projects and explore how the publishing industry can promote green initiatives. Topics include selecting recycled or FSC-certified paper, embracing digital formats like e-books, video, social media, and podcasts, while also fostering mental health awareness. Psychological and environmental sustainability are key considerations throughout the unit.
Introduction of Scriptwriting
UG
The study unit emphasises the role of incorporating sustainability within narratives created by scriptwriters to help reduce the carbon footprint of film and TV productions, in line with EMAS guidelines.
Adaptation for the Screen
UG
The study unit allows students to build on prior learning by integrating sustainability principles in a manner that supports the narrative without overshadowing it.
Documentary Film Production
UG
The study unit promotes sustainability (EMAS guidelines) across all phases of film production by adopting green practices to reduce the carbon footprint. Digital tools are encouraged to minimise paper waste. In cinematography, students are taught to use lightweight, energy-efficient equipment and natural light. For audio design, rechargeable equipment is recommended, while in post-production, cloud-based data storage is preferred to lessen environmental impact.
