Midwives’ perceptions of disability in pregnancy

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the experience of mothers who are pregnant and know that their child is going to be born with a disability. Thus, the emotions felt and challenges that these pregnant women face during the pregnancy, factors affecting the intensity of the situation and how they deal with their negative emotions, were investigated through the perceptions of midwives. Eight warranted midwives who are currently working in the midwifery field were recruited using criterion sampling technique for a semi-structured interview. These interviews were recorded, transcribed and then coded. Since thematic analysis was used as a qualitative method, the codes were combined together to emerge the subordinate themes, and then superordinate themes emerged. As a result, impact of the diagnosis, the adjustment of the process, coping and support superordinate themes were emerged. From this study it was emerged that mothers go through stages of bereavement. The intensity of negative emotions depends mostly on the resilience of the mother. Midwives recommend that mothers in this situation seek professional help and join support groups. Moreover, listening, showing sensitivity, empathy and assurance of support should be guaranteed from the professionals’ end when dealing with these clients.
