The Future of Paceville
€35.00
This is a book for those who believe that the destruction of urban common spaces is an attack against democracy as it leads to a dramatic reduction of rights. In particular, the articles here trace the genesis of an urban oddity in the Maltese context which has become the model and testing ground for a new vision of its future.
Interestingly, the collection of articles has an unusually long history; first drafted ten years ago, they have been enriched with constant and recent analysis. As predicted, the ‘Paceville syndrome’ has meanwhile spread across much of Malta and Gozo.
The picture is not completely grim, however, and the articles provide hope in collective action against the growing risks of excessive commodification and the hegemonic corporate control of planning decisions. They also point out the limits of collective action in a society entrapped in its parochial and clientelist loyalties.
