MEDAC and Germany Renew Partnership to Advance Peace and Conflict Prevention Studies

The Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) at the University of Malta has renewed its long-standing collaboration with the German Federal Foreign Office, ensuring continued support for its flagship Peace and Conflict Prevention Studies programme.

The renewed agreement was signed on 19 December by MEDAC’s Emeritus President and Chairman, George Vella, and Germany’s Ambassador to Malta, Tanja Beyer, in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg.

Since 2009, MEDAC has benefited from German expertise and resources, which have helped shape its postgraduate courses in security, diplomacy, and conflict prevention. German lecturers have been key contributors, sharing their knowledge with students and participating in a wide range of academic initiatives.

Professor Stephen Calleya, MEDAC Director, highlighted the significance of the partnership:
“German support for Peace and Conflict Prevention Studies has been central to MEDAC’s mission for over 16 years. It allows us to equip future diplomats and international professionals with the skills and principles they need to promote dialogue, understanding, and peace.”

Deputy Prime Minister Borg praised the ongoing collaboration, stressing that strong education in diplomacy is vital amid today’s complex geopolitical challenges. Ambassador Beyer added that the programme aligns with European initiatives, such as the European Commission’s “Pact for the Mediterranean,” and represents one of the strongest pillars of Malta-Germany cooperation.
