Prof. Isabelle Gatt was invited as a visiting lecturer by Ineke Edes to Hogeschool Utrecht in the Netherlands, where a series of theatre-based labs and lectures were delivered to academic staff and students specialising in pedagogy. The sessions engaged with educators and trainee pedagogues, reflecting the Dutch higher education context in which “pedagogues” are trained as professionals in educational and social pedagogical practice.
The sessions focused on key areas including imagination, creativity, embodied learning, and the role of the arts within contemporary educational practice. Emphasis was placed on interactive and practice-based methodologies, enabling participants to engage in collaborative forms of inquiry and to explore the application of applied theatre approaches within their professional training.
The programme also included critical discussions on the work of Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal, particularly the intersections between critical pedagogy and applied theatre practices.
The visit builds on an established collaboration between the two institutions, developed over several years and maintained through virtual engagement during the pandemic period. This continued partnership reflects a shared commitment to internationalisation and the exchange of pedagogical practices.
The UM acknowledges the invitation and support of colleagues at Hogeschool Utrecht, particularly Ineke Edes, whose hospitality and collaboration contributed significantly to the success of this academic engagement.
