Soft Launch of the MRER Anniversary Companion Book

Prof. Carmel Borg, Prof. Michelle Attard Tonna, and Dr James Calleja, research academics within the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta, have recently published a companion book entitled Engaging with the MRER 20th Anniversary Archive: Reflections on Three Educational Journeys.

This companion, which accompanies the Building Knowledge: Inspiring Practice: The MRER at 20 published in 2025, brings together three interrelated essays that can be read independently while gaining depth through dialogue with one another. Focusing respectively on inclusive societies and the ethics of education (Carmel Borg), teacher identity and professional agency (Michelle Attard Tonna), and professional development, leadership and school improvement (James Calleja), this book offers a layered analysis that moves from society to teachers to schools. Together, the essays invite readers to consider how educational change is experienced, contested, and sustained.

The launch of this companion book, which took place on 10 April 2026 as part of the International SIPeS Conference 2026 held at the Valletta Campus, was structured as a reflective and dialogic engagement. Following an introduction by Colin Calleja, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Michelle Attard Tonna introduced the book and its connection to the anniversary project, while Carmel Borg situated it within the intellectual and institutional developments that have shaped MRER over the past two decades. James Calleja then described the process through which the book evolved and took shape. Next, the three authors presented a synthesis of their contributions, highlighting key themes and points of convergence within their respective essays. This was concluded by questions from the audience.

This soft launch marks the beginning of a wider series of engagements around the book. The official public launch, which will also feature the launch of the rebranded , is scheduled for 5 June 2026. Further details about the public launch will be announced soon.
