The 2015 Commonwealth Round Table Lecture will be delivered by the distinguished former Prime Minister of Malta, Dr Lawrence Gonzi, on Friday 27 November.
Dr Gonzi will be speaking after the official opening of the Malta Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) earlier that day. The title of his address will be: 'The Commonwealth, The European Union, The Challenges'. He is expected to argue for a rekindling of the Commonwealth spirit in accordance with its core values and to point up the linkages with the European Union as an opportunity for the Commonwealth 'to add global value' (the theme of the Commonwealth summit and its associated forums). He will identify three key challenges - migration; fundamentalism; and global poverty and agricultural policy - and offer his own way forward.
The lecture, which will be followed by a drinks reception with Dr Gonzi and other VIP guests, will be held at the Aula Magna, Old University Buildings, Valletta at 18:00. Entrance is free but seating is limited and early booking is essential. Entry will be by numbered ticket only.
Dr Gonzi was Prime Minister of Malta from 2004 and 2013 and pioneered Malta's entry into the European Union. He was Chairperson-in-Office of the Commonwealth between 2005 and 2007, having chaired the 2005 Malta CHOGM.
The Round Table
The lecture is organised and sponsored by The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs.
Since its foundation in 1910, The Round Table has had a dual function. First, it is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs, which now appears six times a year. The UK鈥檚 oldest international affairs journal, it provides analysis and commentary on all aspects of international affairs, and is the major source for coverage of the policy issues concerning the contemporary Commonwealth and its global role. Secondly, The Round Table is a forum for Commonwealth debate and advocacy.
