Strengthening National Capacities for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in Malta
A public lecture by UNESCO expert, Marina Calvo P猫rez, entitled 脿Maltese traditions as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage脿 will be held on Saturday 3 February 2018.
The safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage, understood as practices, expressions and skills transmitted by communities through generations, has become a priority for culture managers and policy makers.
In this context, Malta recently ratified the UNESCO 2003 Convention devoted to ensure respect and transmission of the living heritage of the groups and individuals concerned. In its definition, intangible heritage is conceived as a dynamic process where participation of communities and respect for diverse cultural values are at the core of the safeguarding initiatives.
This should constitute a guarantee for promoting social cohesion and sustainable development. In the presentation, we will explore the challenges of the implementation of this Convention as an innovative and complex tool to approach the protection of Cultural Heritage.
