Entitled “Blood Joining Blood: The Immersive in Caravaggio’s Malta” the 28th annual Sydney J. Freedberg Lecture on Italian Art will be delivered by on 17 November 2024 at 14:00, at the East Building Auditorium of the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
In his final years, Caravaggio painted ‘The Beheading of St. John the Baptist’ (1608) for the altar of the Oratory of the Decollato in Valletta. In his lecture, Keith Sciberras of the University of Malta will dive into Caravaggio’s use of complex spatial relationships and audience immersion, supported by Sciberras’s decades of site experience and archival research.
