On behalf of the Embassy of Japan in Malta, you are invited to attend our upcoming cultural event, The Sacred Dance of Iwami Kagura: Dynamic Tradition of Japan, which will take place on Friday 5 September at Teatru Manoel.
This special performance is being held to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Malta. In collaboration with the Hamada City Government of Shimane Prefecture, Japan, we are pleased to welcome performers from Japan who will share the vivid and dynamic traditional art of Iwami Kagura with the Maltese audience.
Iwami Kagura is a traditional performing art from the Iwami region in western Shimane Prefecture. Celebrated for its vivid and resplendent fusion of dance, music, and narrative drama, Iwami Kagura traces its roots to sacred Shinto rituals performed by priests during the Edo period (17th to 19th centuries). Over time, it transformed from a solemn religious ceremony into a dynamic form of folk entertainment, now a highlight of local festivals and community events.
