Greg Marsden is Professor of Transport Governance at the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds. He has researched issues surrounding the design and implementation of new policies for over 15 years covering a range of issues. Current work examines how the smart mobility transition will change how we think about what, how and who governs the mobility system. He is the Secretary General of the World Conference on Transport Research Society and the Chair of the Special Interest Group on Governance. He has served as an advisor to the House of Commons Transport Select Committee and regularly advises national and international governments.
Prof. Marsden will be delivering a public lecture on Thursday 11 May between 17:30 and 19:00 in Room 217, Dun Mikiel Xerri Lecture Centre (LC217), entitled 'Should Malta be planning for a different mobility future?'
Recent decades have seen a significant growth in car use as incomes have risen in many countries and cities around the world. However, there is now a growing body of evidence that these trends have slowed or even reversed in a number of places. Explanations are various including changing preferences of younger people, the rise in information and communications technology and changing employment patterns. Some cities have accelerated these trends through targeted reallocation of road space and new fiscal incentives. Looking ahead, electric and autonomous vehicles are at the foothills of adoption and there are some places and companies looking to accelerate a shift to shared mobility rather than personal ownership of vehicles. In summary, a range of mobility futures is possible for Malta. What policy needs does Malta have? What would business as usual look like? What would radical change look like? What lessons might be learnt from elsewhere? This lecture seeks to explore these issues and provoke debate. This lecture is informed by on-going work at the .
