The Department of Gender Studies will be hosting a public lecture entitled ‘Equal Pay in Malta’. The speaker is Ms Sandra Gatt, Director of the Department for Industrial and Employment Relations.
The public lecture will be held on Tuesday 10 April, in Lecture Theatre 1 – Erin Serracino Inglott Hall (LT1), University of Malta Msida Campus, from 17:30 to 19:30.
Ms Sandra Gatt, will take this opportunity to speak about the role of the DEIR to ensure that workers in Malta get equal pay for work of equal value. The Constitution of Malta states: 'The State shall promote the equal right of men and women to enjoy all economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights and for this purpose shall take appropriate measures to eliminate all forms of discrimination between the sexes by any person, organisation or enterprise; the State shall in particular aim at ensuring that women workers enjoy equal rights and the same wages for the same work as men.'
All workers should enjoy equal pay for work of equal value, whether their gender, race, and sexual orientation. The Employment and Industrial Relations Act on the other hand regulates the equal pay for equal work provision and maintains that employees in the same class of employment are entitled to the same rate of remuneration for work of equal value. The speaker will explain what actions the DIER takes to ensure that this happens. Ms Gatt will also speak about the changes which will be and/or might need to be effected to remove the barriers that hinder the effective enforcement of the principle of equal pay for work of equal value.
The general public is cordially invited to attend this public lecture.
