Two European funded training networks of early stage researchers, ECMED and EU-GliaPhD, will organise an international conference “Novel Routes for the Analysis of Epilepsy” at the University of Malta, Valletta Campus from 29 April to 2 May, 2018. This meeting is being organised in conjunction with the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
The brain is the most complex, but also the most vulnerable part of our body. “How does the brain work?” has been among the most frequently asked questions over the centuries. Understanding brain function is a prerequisite to understand its pathologies and to develop novel and better therapies. Over 50 million people worldwide (6 million in Europe – 4000 of them in Malta) have epilepsy and 30% are resistant to our present therapies, resulting in a considerable psychological, social and physical impact on their lives. Epilepsy, therefore, comprises a major burden to society and so there is a pressing need for new approaches to treatment and research into this devastating condition.
This conference not only aims to exchange the latest results in epilepsy research between the research consortia and to foster further European collaboration, but also has a strong focus on the interaction with the interested public.
Limited space is available for researchers from Malta to some of the sessions. Those interested are asked to contact Prof Janet Mifsud: janet.mifsud@um.edu.mt
