The 36th General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission will be held in Malta during 2-7 September 2018.
The event, which is held every two years at a different European city, will this year be held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta. The Local Organising Committee is formed of members from the Department of Geosciences, chaired by Dr Sebastiano D鈥橝mico.
The LOC has received a record number of over 1000 abstracts for oral/poster presentations, and over 500 participants are expected to attend. The presentations will be divided among 42 different sessions, and at least five parallel sessions will be held every day. More than 100 scientific posters will be exhibited daily in the Sacra Infermeria Hall.

The event will cover a wide range of topics ranging from the purely academic to engineering, social and educational aspects of seismology. Keynote speakers include Prof. Alessandro Amato (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Italy), Prof. Attila Ansal (President of the European Association for Earthquake Engineering), Prof. Mitsuyuki Hoshiba (Seismology and Tsunami Research Department, Meteorological Research Institute, Japan), Prof. Keith Koper (University of Utah, USA), Prof. Jaroslava Plomerova (Czech Academy of Science) and Prof. Oona Scotti (Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety, France).
The opening ceremony will take place on Monday 3 September at 09:30 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta. It will be addressed by the President of the Republic, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, through a video message, by the Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, Michael Farrugia, by the Rector of the University of Malta, Prof. Alfred Vella, and by officials of the ESC.
