Event: Online talk: Dealing with emotions as a sport parent
Date: Wednesday 24 March 2021
Time: 18:00 - 19:00
Venue: Online
Speaker: Dr Adele Muscat
This talk, organised by the Institute of Physical Education and Sports, will focus on the emotions children/adolescents express when competing in sport as well as on how parents can handle their own emotions as sport parents.
Young athletes are upset not only when they do not perform as well as they would like to in competition but also when they are not selected for the team or are dropped from the team; when they are injured and cannot train and compete; when they do not get on with their coach and/or team-mates and so much more. Understanding how we may help them deal with such situations is vital if we are to build resilience in the young athlete.
Parenting is, however, challenging and stressful and parents' involvement in sport can make or break their child's experience. Parents who most times are calm, find that at the competition venue they may struggle to control their emotions. During this talk, how parents can handle their own emotions and provide children/adolescents with the right support will also be discussed.
