The freedom of the media to report without censorship or fear of reprisal is a precondition for the effective function of democracy. Acts of harassment against journalists are becoming more frequent in Europe placing the democratic process under threat.
This presentation explores the magnitude of the problem in Europe and the experiences of intimidation of journalists who's role it is to hold in power to account. It discusses the degree of intimidation exposed through the 2017 Council of Europe quantitative study and then zeros in to explore the impact of intimidation and how journalists navigate pressures, negotiate risks and develop resilience.
