This month鈥檚 膴颈苍别齿箩别苍锄补 will be led by Sir David Spiegelhalter, a world-renowned statistician. 膴颈苍别齿箩别苍锄补 is a series of film events organised with the aim of encouraging citizens to partake in scientific practice. Undoubtedly, the pandemic has demonstrated how pertinent data becomes during moments of crisis. In the span of a couple years, we have been bombarded with graphs, numbers, strange diagrams, and complex jargon which attempts to explain COVID-19.
However, valid data is of the essence, as it helps us to tackle complex questions regarding what is happening in society. For this reason, Sir Spiegelhalter will be sharing his own experience on various topics such as: investigating whether a serial killer could have been caught earlier, the measure of human sexual behaviour, as well as, uses of scientific data in the modern world. Various video clips and visual aids provided by BBC Film Productions will be used during this informative and intellectually stimulating discussion.
Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter FRS OBE is Chair of the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication in the Centre for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge, which aims to improve the ways through which statistical evidence is used by health professionals, patients, lawyers, judges, media, and policy-makers. He presented the BBC4 documentaries 鈥淭ails you Win: the Science of Chance鈥, the award-winning 鈥淐limate Change by Numbers鈥, and in 2011 came 7th place in an episode of BBC1鈥檚 'Winter Wipeout.'
He is also the author of the bestselling book The Art of Statistics which was published in March 2019, and COVID by Numbers, which came out in September 2021. In 2014, he was knighted for his contribution to the field of medical statistics. Furthermore, he was also the President of the Royal Statistical Society (2017-2018), and would then go on to become a non-Executive Director of the UK Statistics Authority in 2020.
