The Department of Italian is proud to announce Journey into the slang of “gٳپ” and “sھپԳ”, a talk which is going to be delivered on 20 October 2022 by Dr Irene Incarico, during the 22nd edition of the Italian Language Week in the World. The talk, organised in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta, will be held in Italian at the Faculty of Arts Library, Msida Campus.
As the student demonstrations and the so-called Lead Years came to an end, Northern and Central Italy became populated by super-tanned and fashionable young people who reacted to the recent past by rejecting any political creed, dedicating themselves to an all-Italian reinterpretation of the look and lifestyle from across the pond and electing the sandwich bars of the big cities, inspired by the aesthetics of American fast food, as the privileged seat of their urban tribe. They were the ‼ԾԲ”.&Բ;Distinguished by unbridled consumerism, exasperated television hedonism typical of the Eighties, and a para-religious cult for top designer brands, they were perpetually poised between slavish homologation and a frantic search for a unique style. Their way of expressing themselves was moulded from the language of fashion, pop music, the omnipresent advertising of the decade, in a fluctuating magma of anglicisms, neologisms, dialecticisms and youthful slang, which eventually penetrated the national media, contaminating the press and television.
Dr Irene Incarico is Visiting Senior Lecturer in the Department of Italian of the University of Malta, where she teaches study-units ranging from medieval literature to social history of Italian popular music. She published articles on science fiction, Emilio Salgari, and Stephen King. She co-authored a ‘cybergoth’ novel and authored several science fiction and horror short stories. She also co-edited with Alice Favaro the book Eurofumetto & globalizzazione: Studi su graphic novel e linguaggi dei comics (Cut-Up Publishing, 2018).
