Title: CERN and SESAME: Science bridging cultures and nations
Date: 8 November 2022
Time: 15:00
Venue: Pietru Pawl Saydon Lecture Theatre (ALT), Msida Campus, University of Malta
The President of the Council of SESAME and former Director General of CERN, Prof. Rolf Heuer will be delivering a public lecture on Tuesday 8 November 2022 at 15:00 at the Pietru Pawl Saydon Lecture Theatre (ALT). Entitled “CERN and SESAME: Science bridging cultures and nations”, the lecture will provide an insight into the operations of CERN and SESAME and how different academics and researchers from different countries are benefitting from such projects.
The facility based in Amman, Jordan, was set up in 2017. This synchrotron light source (SESAME) is an accelerator-based facility that uses electromagnetic radiation emitted by circulating electron beams to study a range of properties of matter. It is equipped with beamlines that focus the light on samples that scientists wish to study. Each beamline can support several experiments in series and in parallel. Synchrotron light sources have become an essential tool in a very wide range of applied and basic sciences.
Prof. Heuer served as Director General of CERN between 2009 and 2015. During his term in office, Prof. Heuer oversaw the start of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as well as its energy increase in 2015, the discovery of the H-Boson and the geographical enlargement of CERN Membership. He also actively engaged CERN in promoting the importance of science and STEM education for the sustainable development of the society.
Prof. Heuer has published over 500 scientific papers and holds many Honorary Degrees from universities in Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada. He is member of several Academies of Sciences in Europe, in particular of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and Honorary Member of the European Physical Society.
Admission to the lecture is free of charge.
