Event: Exploring the science behind your favourite movies

The initiative is set to enter its ninth season this October, with an exciting line-up of films covering topics such as disease outbreaks, mental health and fish farming. Drawing on the success of past years, monthly film screenings will be followed by discussions with prominent scientists and experts at . Each film will serve as a springboard for the expert speakers to discuss current scientific research or technological advances related to the theme portrayed in the film in an informal manner.
In order to inspire new audiences, particularly youths, to engage with science and research in a fun and creative way, the Malta Chamber of Scientists has partnered with to encourage the active participation of young people in these events.
The first event will be held on Tuesday 17 October 2023, and will include a screening of I Am Legend, followed by a discussion on cancer and gene therapies, and disease outbreaks. The second screening will be held on Tuesday 14 November 2023, and will include a screening of The Social Dilemma, followed by a discussion on the psychology of addiction, the ethics of data privacy, and the role of technology in society. The third event will be held on Tuesday 12 December 2023, and will include a screening of Annihilation, followed by a discussion on what makes us humans human, and how our DNA can already be manipulated or cloned. The fourth event will be held on Tuesday 12 March 2024, and will include a screening of Memento, followed by discussion on how memories are formed and how they can be lost. The final event will be held on Tuesday 23 April 2024 and will include a screening of Artifishal, followed by our discussion on farmed fish, our declining fish stocks, and how which fish we decide to eat can actually help.
