Time: 17:30
Venue: Gateway Building Hall E
Speaker: Prof. Jonas Ciurlionis, Vilnius University
The Department of Philosophy will once again be organising its Research Seminars series. The 2023-24 series begins with a talk by Prof. Jonas Ciurlionis on 'The Ancient Greek concept of Harmony’.
Abstract:
Ancient philosophy art and science is based upon the concept of Harmony. We also use harmony when we speak about music, nature, society, or family relations. However, what is Harmony? Is it a vague expression or a very precise definition? This talk will argue that Ancient Greeks had a very clear notion of Harmony which was understood as Logos and was a basis of all mathematical sciences: arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy/astrology. The talk will analyse the mathematical structure of Harmony together with its applications. We will see how the ancient idea of the Harmony of the Spheres, Harmony of a Soul or Harmony of Social and Political order is defined via the application of the same mathematical principles.
