Event: A snapshot of the local air quality: Regulated pollutants and beyond
Date: 15 November 2023
Time: 12:00 – 13:00
Venue: Maths & Physics Building Lab 602 (MP602)
Speaker: Prof. Noel Aquilina
Abstract: This seminar is intended to give an overview of the local air quality in the context of the first local impact assessment due to the long term exposure to fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide. As it is a well-known fact that the Northern Harbour district is susceptible to higher pollution levels, data about regulated pollutants will be presented for a traffic-busy street canyon. This information will be compared to the local air quality network data. The discussion will extend to the use of non-regulated pollutants and the likelihood exposure scenario in such an urban fabric whose atmospheric chemistry is complex and challenging to study. This would be the adequate venue to discuss a wider range of pollutants linked with the indoor environment which go beyond the experience of the outdoor environment.
The Speaker: Noel Aquilina is an atmospheric chemist and exposure scientist. His expertise spans over interdisciplinary skills of analytical chemistry, use of biomarkers, sampling air and applying machine learning to model personal exposure to pollutants. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry.
