Did you know that, according to the , 15% of women in Malta have experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence?
In every country, including ours, women do not live their lives free of violence, coercion and sexism. Health impacts from these are strongly felt and can last a lifetime. We as the UM community have a duty to bring attention to and respond to these acts.
Running from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, until 10 December, Human Rights Day, the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence are a key international moment to unite and call for an end to violence against women and girls. This year’s theme chosen by the United Nations Secretary General is Invest to Prevent Violence against Women & Girls, a renewed effort to raise more awareness, spur more advocacy efforts and share knowledge to help end all types of violence against women and girls.
To this end, the University’s Equity Office is this year inviting you to join its astounding guest line-up, made up of poets, activists, artists, academics and students, among others, to help shed light on this critical issue through their invaluable insight as well as the unprecedented effort of sharing highlights from the compilation of UM students’ dissertations on various aspects of gender-based violence and violence against women and girls.
Our collective goal is to foster understanding, cultivate sensitivity, and raise awareness about the stark realities surrounding gender-based violence.
Your participation is vital in driving positive change.
