Event: The Human Rights Model of Disability: Implications for Research, Policy and Practice

In this hybrid event, Prof. Campos Pinto will begin by tracing the emergence and development of disability in the international human rights agenda - from the celebration of the International Decade for Disabled People in the 1980s up until the adoption of the CRPD in 2006.
Next, she will explore the key features of the human rights model of disability: dignity, respect for human diversity, agency and participation. Finally, she will discuss how taking the human rights approach seriously fundamentally changes the way we do research, policy and practice.
Short Biography
Paula Campos Pinto holds a PhD in Sociology from York University, Toronto, Canada. She is an Associate Professor at the School for Social and Political Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ISCSP-U Lisbon), where she also founded and coordinates the Observatory on Disability and Human Rights, a platform that brings together academics, disability organisations and decision-makers to support disability research and advance disability rights in Portugal. ODDH produces annually a report with disability equality indicators, which is widely used by disability organisations and activists to support their advocacy efforts.
Paula Campos Pinto has coordinated numerous national and international research projects related to disability, human rights, gender, and the impact of policy on people鈥檚 lives, and is the author of many national and international publications.
