Venue: Room 206, Gateway Building, University of Malta, Msida Campus
Speaker: Alberto Ostini (Sergio Bonelli Editore)
The Faculty of Arts’ M.A. in Film Studies, in collaboration with the Department of Italian, proudly presents “Writing for Comics, Writing for Cinema”, a talk to be held in the format of a conversation with veteran scriptwriter Alberto Ostini (Sergio Bonelli Editore).
The talk is scheduled for next 17 April 2024, at 18:00 in Room 206 of the Msida Campus’ Gateway Building, and will be open to the general public.
During the session, Alberto Ostini will explore the various tools of the trade and challenges inherent in writing for comics and cinema, highlighting the similarities and subtle differences between these two creative pursuits.
Alberto Ostini embarked on his career in 1994 as a scriptwriter for Sergio Bonelli Editore, Italy’s most prestigious and long-lived comic-book publishing company. Since 2008, he has also contributed scripts to several successful Italian TV series and films, including 6 passi nel giallo (Mediaset, 2012), which was entirely shot in Malta. This production pays homage to the iconic directors of the ‘Italian giallo cinema’ of the 1970s and 1980s, such as Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Enzo Castellari, Lucio Fulci, and Antonio Margheriti.
In collaboration with Giovanni Masi and Mauro Uzzeo, Alberto Ostini penned the screenplay for Dampyr, a 2022 feature film based on the ongoing comic-book series of the same title, created by Mauro Boselli and Maurizio Colombo in 2000. Notably, Dampyr recently ranked #3 on Netflix US’ top 10 most popular movies chart in December.
Additionally, Alberto Ostini serves as a part-time lecturer, teaching scriptwriting and creative storytelling at M.A. level at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan.
The Faculty of Arts’ M.A. in Film Studies is a part-time evening course sponsored by the Malta Film Commission. The programme combines theory with a practical component which gives the students the opportunity to collectively plan and shoot short films, developing them from the scriptwriting to the postproduction stages.
