On Thursday 9 May 2024 at 17:00, at the University of Malta in Msida, Dr Albert Friggieri will be giving a public lecture about "German Translations of Maltese Literary Works." The talk in English will include readings in Maltese and German by University students Maxine Tanti and Nicole Vassallo. This event is being organised by the Departments of German and Maltese in the Faculty of Arts and will be held in Gateway Hall B1, the building at the main entrance to the University.
German linguists have been publishing the results of their research on the Maltese language since the beginning of the 17th century. The first German translations of Maltese literature, however, only appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. Much later, in the second half of the 20th century, two anthologies with works by Maltese authors – one containing poems by a single author and the other a collection of prose and poetry by six authors – were published in German translation. Although the number of Maltese literary works translated and printed in German remains rather small, the first two decades of this century have seen a significant increase in such publications.
Dr Albert Friggieri will be giving an overview of the German translations of Maltese literary works that have appeared in print. Extracts will be recited in German and Maltese by Maxine Tanti and Nicole Vassallo, students from the Departments of German and Maltese. The lecture is co-organised by the Departments of German and Maltese and will be held in English.
Dr Albert Friggieri holds a PhD in German from the University of Exeter and is a former Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Department of German, University of Malta. After 25 years in the position of managing director of an international German-owned company in Malta, Dr Friggieri served as Malta’s Ambassador to Germany from 2013 to 2019 and is currently the non-resident Ambassador of Malta to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. He is the Honorary President of the German-Maltese Circle and honorary life member of the Maltese-German Association of Germany.
