Date: Friday 3 May 2024
Time: 18:00
Venue: Faculty of Arts Library, Old Humanities Building, Msida Campus
The ’ M.A. in Film Studies proudly presents the talk “In Search of The Wicker Man: From Wickermania! to Children of The Wicker Man”, which will be held on 3 May 2024, at the Faculty of Arts , Msida Campus.
Documentary filmmaking is so often about finding the story as you go along, but in the context of the newly completed Children of The Wicker Man this was an understatement. The final film, which will be screened in its entirety on Sunday 5 May at 18:30 at the Theatre, was the result of a constant shaping that took a lot of different twists and turns as it developed.
In this talk, co-directors Justin Hardy, Dominic Hardy, Chris Nunn and producer Alison Palmer, will walk us through the process of making the documentary, from its inception as Wickermania!, an academic piece commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Robin Hardy’s cult film The Wicker Man, to the far more personal meditation on independent filmmaking and fatherhood in the final documentary Children of The Wicker Man.
As part of this talk, each speaker will show a favourite clip from the final film, and also a favourite sequence which, for one reason or another, was eventually cut. For anyone interested in the processes of documentary filmmaking and production, this talk promises a keen insight into how these films are produced, and just how many ‘darlings’ you ruthlessly have to kill in the process...
The talk will be open to the general public.
The Faculty of Arts’ M.A. in Film Studies is a part-time evening course sponsored by the Malta Film Commission.
The programme combines theory with a practical component which gives the students the opportunity to collectively plan and shoot short films, developing them from the scriptwriting process to the postproduction stages.
Speakers: Justin Hardy, Dominic Hardy (Université du Québec à Montréal), Chris Nunn (University of Birmingham), Alison Palmer
