Event: Climate Change in Earth's History
Date: Monday 11 March 2025
Time: 18:30-20:00
Venue: Campus Hub, Level 5 Room O517
Earth has experienced many climate changes since its formation. A common cause of change is very significant introductions or withdrawals of carbon dioxide to and from the atmosphere and oceans.
Some changes led to severe icehouse or hothouse climates. For the past two to three million years, the Earth has experienced a series of Ice Ages with a repeating pattern of cold (glacial) and less cold (interglacial) periods triggered by variations in the Earth鈥檚 orbit, angle of tilt and wobble.
The current, unprecedented rate of emissions, dramatically breaks the
usual pattern of gradual cooling in interglacial periods with a sudden and rapid warming trend.
What might this lead to? Possible futures, based on past warming events in Earth's history will be indicated for different carbon dioxide contents of the atmosphere.
