A new 4-year B.Sc (Hons) in Physics and Geoscience will be one of the undergraduate study options within the Faculty of Science as from October 2017. This combination is ideal for students who would like to study physics but would also like to have direct experience of its applications in the Earth sciences. The combination of Geoscience with Physics will ensure that students obtain the necessary understanding of physics, mathematics and computing core areas to enable them to apply these principles to the understanding of how our planet works.
The Geosciences are at the core of many of today鈥檚 global issues, such as natural resources and their exploration/exploitation, climate change, geohazards and environmental problems. The Department of Geosciences aims to develop a new generation of highly skilled geoscientists, who will have a rigorous scientific education in the natural and earth sciences, field and computational proficiency, as well as hands-on experience with modern equipment and facilities.
Geoscience graduates have a holistic understanding of how the Earth works and how to solve real-world problems. Geoscience is a highly rewarding and interdisciplinary field of study which exposes the students to a wide array of interesting methodologies, field, laboratory and computational experiences, providing them with a highly flexible skill set that can be applied in a choice of career options. Graduates will thus be prepared to work on some of society鈥檚 most challenging problems.

The first two years of the Geoscience area consist of compulsory subjects, such as geology, geophysics, physical oceanography, atmospheric science, GIS and programming skills, etc, while in the last two years, a wide choice of electives are offered, such that the student can choose a particular 'pathway' such as atmospheric and ocean sciences, or geophysics and geology.
