This is the time for saving lives. This is the time that so many Doctors, Pharmacists and other health care workers studied so much for, trained so much for and spent so much time training others for. Since its foundation, 250 years ago as the Collegio Medico, the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery of the University of Malta has helped students who had the vocation to become competent, conscientious and caring healthcare professionals, that have been critical to Malta鈥檚 healthcare system, and maintained its standards at levels that are of sound international standing.
In these difficult times, Doctors and Pharmacists, together with all multidisciplinary teams and laboratory scientists, are working together to address a national crisis. The Faculty of Medicine & Surgery would like to publicly express its support for the dedication and commitment of all its alumni. The Superintendent of Public Health and her team working within the Ministry for Health are exerting a difficult and crucial role in the planning, co-ordination, and execution of multiple activities that together aim to contain the spread of COVID-19, and ensure the availability of necessary resources to treat those who fall victim to the virus. The internal prioritising and restructuring of facilities and services within all hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and residential homes, has seen health care professionals teaming with chief executive officers, directors and multilevel administrators to put into place the necessary framework to handle this national emergency. Doctors and Pharmacists within hospitals, health centres and community practice have committed themselves to the front-line on a daily basis, while students have volunteered their time to support the COVID-19 response team.
The Faculty expresses its sincere thanks to all those who professionally and selflessly committed themselves to continue to provide and promote healthcare, through whatever means, during this pandemic. You have made the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery, and indeed your whole Alma Mater proud.
The Faculty also wishes to re-iterate and emphasise the importance and civic responsibility of closely following all official advice and guidance issued by our colleague the Superintendent of Public Health.
