, Head of Department of Banking & Finance within the Faculty of Economics, Management & Accountancy, was recently asked by the European Commission鈥檚 office in Malta to chair a roundtable on digital finance in the EU.
Together with a number of Maltese stakeholders and Mr Jan Ceyssens, Head of the Digital Finance Unit at the DG FISMA (Financial Stability, Financial 福利在线免费 & Capital Markets Union), Dr Suban led a discussion on what new challenges digital innovation is bringing to the financial sector and how the EU Commission is facing them.
Investor expectations, especially those with a lower risk appetite, inconsistent data keeping within financial institutions, a lack of readiness for Fintech, skills gaps, and a lack of agility are among the challenges discussed.
This discussion is part of the EU Commission鈥檚 Digital Finance Outreach Programme of 2020, which included other discussions on how digital finance can support sustainability, how stakeholders can promote a more data-driven financial sector and how digital finance can help tackle the COVID-19 crisis.
鈥淒igital finance challenges are with us, and the rate of adaptability determines businesses鈥 likelihood of surviving and thriving. It is thus pivotal to help stakeholders identify their issues and improve on them before they get too critical to overcome鈥, said Dr Suban on the need to discuss such a wide-ranging topic on international fora.
