Dr Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., President and CEO of Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, US and UM alumni, is first author in an article just published on A Qualitative Analysis of Career Advice Given to Women Leaders in an Academic Medical Center, in the leading medical journal .
Dr Farrugia was appointed President and CEO of Mayo Clinic in 2019.
Prior to this, he served as a Mayo Clinic vice president and CEO of Mayo Clinic in Florida. During the course of his career, Dr. Farrugia has spent nearly 30 years as a Mayo physician jointly appointed in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Dr. Farrugia completed his undergraduate training at St Aloysius College and earned his medical degree from the University of Malta Medical School.
This paper is a qualitative study based on responses from 40 women leaders at the Mayo Clinic, which found that advice could be grouped into 4 categories: leadership styles are perceived as having gendered qualities, a strategic process is required to gain leadership skills, conflicts between personal life and the workplace will occur and should not be a deterrent, and leadership pathways for women involve inevitable hurdles.
