A Memorandum of Understanding signed on Monday 14 September sees the Ministry of Foreign Affairs collaborating with the within the University of Malta to support actions and projects in the areas of Islands and Small States.
The two will be jointly cooperating on a number of projects. The Institute will be offering consultancy services to the Ministry, and the latter will fund scholarships for students from small states. Lobbying international organisations for funding to set up a centre in Malta towards combating money laundering in small states is yet another project they will be jointly working on.
Speaking during the signing, Minister for European Affairs Hon. Evarist Bartolo said money laundering is a problem faced by a number of small states, and thus overcoming it in a structured manner is essential.
University of Malta Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella said the role of Institute is not just limited to it being a research centre but it also organises summits and international gatherings, meaning that it its work is recognised and cited by many.
The Institute for Islands & Small States was set up around 30 years ago by economist and UM academic .
