It is the duty of lecturers and the rest of the UM community to make their voice heard and be a source of light among all the noise generated by the media, said University of Malta Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella, during Andrew Azzopardi on 103 a radio programme aired on 103 and presented by Prof. Andrew Azzopardi.
Prof. Vella was a guest on the radio programme, during which he was probed on various matters such as the role a University should have in students’ lives, the upcoming academic years and the safety protocol being implemented due to COVID-19, as well as his future intentions.
The Rector mentioned that an institution such as UM needs not only help form professions but also instil a sense of critical thinking amongst its population, a “forma mentis”, as he called it.
The Rector finally expressed that he is currently rethinking his original idea of being a 'one-term rector' due to the various projects, currently ongoing at the University of Malta. Other topics also involved the current efforts being undertaken on Campus to ensure a protected environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
