A heartfelt Facebook post by from the Department of Mental Health within the Faculty of Health Sciences has touched many, as she recounted the recent story of when, together with her two young children, she visited her 75-year-old mother, who has dementia.
Through her personal experience, she raises awareness on how challenging the pandemic has made visiting times, both for patients, and for their loved ones.
“She does not seem to recognise us and cannot hold a conversation. If that is not challenging enough, you then have to keep the COVID-19 measures in mind: 15-minute visits, behind a glass door, with a limited number of visitors who need to wear masks. But a birthday is a birthday, and there we were…” Dr Grech wrote.
Despite secretly hoping that the commotion her children would make, would “snap her mother out of the dementia and result in a full recovery there and then”, deep inside this was an illogical hope, based on pure love.
