Mr Nathan Anthony Pace, a student at the G.F. Abela Junior College, has won the contest, an international translation contest with the theme ‘Navigating in challenging times – together we are stronger’, judged by members of the European Commission.
Together with a Lithuanian participant, Mr Pace obtained the highest mark (39 out of 40) for translating a piece related to the theme from English to Maltese.
All participants had the option to translate between two official EU language, one of them being English. A total of 27 students from Malta and Gozo participated.
Mr Pace is a student of the Department of English. He will now be representing the Junior College in an online award ceremony this July.
Another two Junior College students, namely Ms Evie Cezek and Ms Laura Chetcuti Dimech, received a special mention for their fluent translation.
Juvenes Translatores (Young translators) has been organised annually since 2007, encouraging students to consider the profession of translation as a possible career path at university.
Johannes Hahn, the European Commissioner for Budget and Administration, has commended the participants as well as their teachers for being determined to carry on with organising the competition in addition to organising online lessons.
