The Department of Media & Communications of the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences at the University of Malta, in collaboration with student organisations MKSA and , will be organising a webinar in which the future of political media stations in Malta will be discussed.
Last February, the news portal Lovin’ Malta filed a court case which challenges a law approved by Parliament thirty years ago, stating that it is unconstitutional. While the Constitution set up the Broadcasting Authority to ensure that broadcasting services provided in Malta remain impartial with regards to political matters, a provision in the Broadcasting Act allows party-owned media stations to function on condition that they cancel each other out in terms of their political imbalances.
The first Media Talks debate, which will be held online on 12 May at 18:00, will provide a space for debating the function of political stations, also within a constitutional context, and their future in the Maltese media landscape.
The webinar will be held over Zoom, and transmitted live on Facebook.
The main panel will include:
- Mr Chris Peregin, the founder and CEO of Lovin’ Malta,
- Dr Ramona Attard, the President of the Labour Party, and
- Dr Francis Zammit Dimech, the Secretary General of the Nationalist Party.
Media Talks will be open to the public, and registered members of the public are encouraged to make interventions during the webinar. Anyone interested in the future of broadcasting in Malta is invited to register for and to attend this debate. Please fill in the registration form and a Zoom link will be sent to your preferred e-mail address close to the webinar date.
