The University of Malta’s Department of Public Health has officially joined the esteemed Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (better known as ASPHER).
is a key independent European organisation dedicated to strengthening the role of public health by improving education and training of public health professionals, for both practice and research.
This dynamic community of public health schools spread across the EU and the WHO European Region, shares best practices among each other, and plays a role in guideline development at national level and supporting members’ research efforts to expand knowledge of public health among the general public.
Prof. Neville Calleja, Head of the Department of Public Health, within the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, said this milestone comes after two years of work together with the assistance of the Italian Association of Public Health, towards the introduction of a new category of small schools of public health.
“This alliance will help our entire Faculty to keep abreast of the developments in the world of public health education, for our own benefit, but more importantly for the benefit of our whole student body and for the nation as a whole”, he continued.
Prof. Calleja was recently interviewed by former Sky News and Al Jazeera presenter, David Foster, from TRT World, on the country’s vaccination milestones, where he emphasised the role of healthcare professionals in Malta’s successful vaccination roll-out programme.
