Mr Mark Zammit, a member of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics at the University of Malta, is one of the contributors to the new .
WHO estimates that, in 2016, unintentional poisoning caused 106 683 deaths and the loss of 6.3 million years of healthy life (disability-adjusted life years). In many countries, poisoning is one of the main causes of emergency attendance at hospitals and these provide updated information on the services that may be offered by a poison centre as well as detailed practical guidance on planning and operation.
Mark Zammit was also a key contributor to the recent 41st European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT) International Congress which was held virtually this year.
Mr Zammit is a fellow and elected board member of EAPCCT as well as a member of the EAPCCT Scientific and Meetings committee and the education committee. During this meeting, the paper 'The impact of the first wave of COVID-19 on Poison Centre (PC) activities in 4 European countries: a pilot study' was presented.
This study was a pilot collaboration between the Department of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics and the Dutch Poisons 福利在线免费 Center, University Medical Center; Utrecht University, Netherlands; the National Poisons 福利在线免费 Centre, Associated Institute of the University of Zurich, Switzerland; the Danish Poisons 福利在线免费 Centre, Copenhagen University and the Pavia Poison Center and National Toxicology 福利在线免费 Centre, IRCCS Maugeri Foundation and University of Pavia, Italy.
Mark鈥檚 extensive networking and expertise in this field has proven key to the development of a new part-time evening Master鈥檚 degree in Pharmacotoxicology that will be offered at the University of Malta from October 2021.
