Graduates from the Faculty of Economics, Management, and Accountancy (FEMA) formally joined the Malta Institute of Accountants during the MIA New Members’ Ceremony held on Tuesday 3 August 2021.
Nearly 200 students collected their membership certificates in a highly-anticipated event that was moved forward from 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Prof. Frank Bezzina, exiting Dean of FEMA and the University's Pro-Rector for International Development & Quality Assurance, congratulated the young members on their achievements and encouraged them to continue developing their skills. Addressing the event, he said that the profession as a whole appears to have managed the effects of the pandemic successfully but warned that other obstacles lie ahead.
“When the financial crisis triggered by COVID-19 fades, there will be new challenges for accountants arising from automation, technology disruption, crypto currencies, and the rise of data-driven jobs,” cautioned Prof. Bezzina, adding that this does not mean that the profession is in danger. “Accountancy jobs are not grim at all but, rather, very encouraging.”
He appealed to the young professionals to keep sharpening their digital knowhow and invest in soft skills such as creativity, adaptability, communication, and leadership qualities.
Prof. Bezzina said that the profession is becoming increasingly pivotal in the life of businesses and that stakeholders hold accountants in high esteem: “You represent the moral compass of the organisation and I urge you to exercise sound judgment and uphold high standards of ethics and integrity throughout your careers.”
In his remarks, Prof. Bezzina thanked the Institute for elevating the quality of the profession and ensuring that it remains an important player in national strategic issues.
The event was presided by the President of the MIA, Mr Fabio Axisa, who saluted the graduates and encouraged them to do their part in strengthening the profession: “You are the backbone of the profession, and this is your institute.”
Mr Axisa commended the attendees on their accomplishments in an extraordinary year and extended his thank to their families who backed graduates reach their goals. A seasoned professional himself, the President offered the young members some tips on how to make the most of their careers for the benefit of the profession and communities.
“Every action you take from now on will determine who you become, but there is no magic formula to success,” advised Mr Axisa, urging the newcomers to avoid short cuts. “We all make mistakes, but as professionals you must have that desire to do the right thing.”
In her address, MIA CEO Ms Maria Cauchi Delia welcomed the new members and pledged the support of the Institute throughout their careers. “Accounting is exciting, rewarding, impactful, and influential,” the CEO told participants, “As members of the Institute you now have the opportunity to shape the future of the profession.”
This edition of the New Members’ Ceremony was the first in-person event held by the MIA since the start of the pandemic and was held in accordance with the latest safety protocols issued by the health authorities.
