In line with the University of Malta’s International Strategy, which commits the educational entity to engage more effectively with others situated on the southern shore of the Mediterranean, heightened levels of engagement and various new collaborative activities over the next five years have been established with Tunisian counterparts.
These intentions are embodied in a new Memorandum of Understanding signed recently between the University of Malta (UM) and the University of Tunis El Manar (UTM), Tunisia. Signature place during an official meeting organised remotely between the two Universities.
The University of Malta has been actively working to collaborate more effectively with Tunisia with strong interest being expressed in developing joint teaching and research initiatives in a number of fields that are of common interest.
The UM was introduced to the University of Tunis El Manar by the Embassy of Malta in Tunisia, following an official visit of the Ambassador of Malta to Tunisia, HE Mr Simon Pullicino. The collaboration was formalised through a meeting of the Rector of the UM, Professor Alfred J. Vella and the President of UTM Professor Moez Chafra at which a number of senior UM and UTM officials were also present.
The University of Tunis El Manar has identified a number of areas that it would like to explore with the UM – namely ICT, Sustainable Development, Entrepreneurship, Young Researchers, Training and Internship initiatives and Sustainable Development in the University setting. A plan for follow-up discussion was discussed during the course of the meeting.
Bringing together 15 different institutions, UTM was established as a University in 1987 and is presently considered as one of the top 13 public universities in Tunisia. It is also ranked no.10 in Africa.
Both sides expressed appreciation for the work of the Embassy of Malta in Tunisia which has been instrumental in promoting the said collaboration.
