On 14 June, the World Health Organisation (WHO) commemorates blood donors day, and at UM we are doing our part in raising awareness by lighting up the University entrance in red lights throughout this week along with other entities and institutions across the country.
For 2022, the World Blood Donor Day slogan is “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives” to draw attention to the roles that voluntary blood donations play in saving lives and enhancing solidarity within communities. The aim of this day is to raise global awareness for the need for safe blood and blood products for transfusion:
-
Highlight the critical contribution voluntary, unpaid blood donors make to national health systems
-
Support national blood transfusion services, blood donor organisations and other nongovernmental organisations in strengthening and expanding their voluntary blood donor programmes by reinforcing national and local campaigns.
The University of Malta collaborates with the National Blood Transfusion Service on a monthly basis, where the mobile blood donation unit is available next to Mater Dei Hospital, where members of staff and students can go and donate blood whenever they can.
