(Integrating Neandertal Legacy: From Past to Present), a COST Action whose Management Committee Member representative for Malta is Johann Galdies from the Department of Geosciences, held its latest scientific training school last July. Organised within the ambit of its Genetic Data Working Group and hosted by the , the training school served (as its title stated) as an Introduction to Neandertal Palaeogenomic Analyses for Non-Geneticists.
Following in the wake of the great flourishing in genetic studies, palaeobiologists and palaeoanthropologists have also turned to genetic evidence in order to investigate further the history and constitution of prehistoric organisms, including humans and our relatives the Neandertals and Denisovans. Since the year 2005, exciting new genetic investigations and discoveries have shed much light the evolutionary relationships between anatomically modern humans and our closest extinct relatives.
