Dr Anne Marie Thake was awarded an international scholarship to participate in the study of the U.S. Institute for scholars (SUSI) on “Workforce Development - Youth, Workforce Development and Closing the Skills Gap: Preparing for the 21st Century Economy and Industries for the Future.” This was organised by the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center, University of Montana, Missoula, USA. It consisted of an intensive, post-graduate three-week virtual academic residency in July 2021 and an integrated in-person experience in September 2022. Dr Thake participated in educational and cultural activities, lectures and site visits to local communities.
The Institute on Workforce Development provided the multinational group of 16 experienced foreign Faculty and practitioners with a deeper understanding of how recent socioeconomic trends have changed the concept of work, workforce development, and career paths in the United States. The academic programme included the role of U.S. educational institutions, particularly community colleges, in preparing Americans with the skills needed to succeed in multiple industries including business, technology, science, the creative arts, and emerging fields. The Institute offered opportunities for participants to research new ideas, in conjunction with American peers, to better understand the evolution of work, the changing demand for skills, and the advancements in workforce development through retraining and reskilling.
The University of Montana is a public flagship research university in Missoula known for academic rigour, experiential learning, inclusive culture and beautiful scenery. It was an enriching experience for Dr Thake who made connections with this University. She will be collaborating with the University of Montana to organise a Master study unit taught virtually by Maltese and Montanan lecturers which will be attended by both national and international students.
