Conrad Thake, associate professor at the Department of Art and Art History, Faculty of Arts is the recipient of the National Book Prize 2022 in the ‘General Research’ category. The book entitled Art Nouveau to Modernism, Architecture in Malta 1910–1950, provides an analytical account of architecture in Malta during the inter-wars period.
The book besides contextualizing architecture at the time within a socio-economic and political context, provides detailed expositions of the careers of the main architectural protagonists; Andrea Vassallo, Giuseppe Psaila, Gustavo. R. Vincenti, and Godwin Galizia. The book is based on extensive research carried out at the National Malta Archives and other archival sources. The publication is complemented by a diverse selection of historic and contemporary photographs, plans, and drawings. The book was published by Kite Group in collaboration with the Department of Art and Art History.
The winners of the 2022 National Book Prize were announced in a ceremony held at the National Museum of Arts (MUŻA) in Valletta, and attended by the Minister for Education Permanent Secretary, Matthew Vella. The National Book Prize is presented annually by the National Book Council with the aim of celebrating the highest achievements in literary and research publishing in Malta.
