Dr Charles Xuereb has just been decorated by the eminent Academie française. The French academy, founded by Cardinal Richelieu in 1635, is the highest academic authority that has been historically entrusted with the protection and promotion of the French language and literature worldwide.
In the 2022 roll of honours conferred by the academy on 1 December 2022 in Paris, Dr Xuereb was one of five international recipients of the Prix du Rayonnement de la Langue française for his contribution to the French language outreach in Malta.
The citation, describing Dr Xuereb as ‘a Maltese historiographer, commentator of cultural and political French issues in Malta’ adds that for his contribution to furthering research on Maltese-French history and promoting Maltese-French relations, Dr Xuereb could be considered as the de facto ‘permanent consul for France’ on the Island.
Dr Xuereb is a visiting lecturer and holds a Ph. D. from l-Università ta’ Malta with his thesis on 'France in the Maltese Collective Memory, Perspectives, Perceptions, Identities after Bonaparte in British Malta' (Malta University Press, 2014/2021, now in its 3rd edition). He also chairs Campus FM’s Editorial Board.
This month, Midsea Books has just published his latest research entitled 'Decolonising the Maltese Mind, in search of identity'.
