The Islands and Small States Institute (ISSI) has recently visited the University of Mauritius and the University of the Seychelles to discuss the preliminary results of the UM project “Beyond Pandemics: Improving climate resilience and health systems in small island states”.
A delegation composed by Dr Stefano Moncada (Principal Investigator and ISSI Director) and Mr Luca Nguyen (principal project research officer) discussed the exposure of Small Island States (SIS) to existing climate and public health risks, as well as resilience-building measures that SIS can adopt to address such crisis, especially when happening simultaneously.
The delegation continued the fieldwork in Mauritius, finalising data collection in connection to original household surveys and participatory focus groups with climate and health experts. The delegation worked closely with local communities and stakeholders to gather valuable insights and information to inform the project’s objectives.
The second part of the visit was held in the small Indian Ocean state of the Seychelles, where the Beyond Pandemics project was presented to academics and government authorities, exploring potential avenues for future cooperation in this specific area of research.
“The ISSI is committed to continue working towards building effective partnerships with academic institutions in the Indian Ocean, and the project Beyond Pandemics is an important step in this direction. The ISSI is confident that the project will contribute toward addressing some of the most pressing challenges in this Region.” reported Stefano Moncada, Director of the ISSI.
The ISSI would like to thank the Project Support Office, the Finance Office and the Pro-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer for the excellent collaboration to make this project a success.
