Prof. Dr Enrique Eguiarte Bendimez from the Pontifical Augustinian Institute in Rome delivered the 2023 St Augustine Lecture organised by the Augustinian Institute and the Department of within the at the University of Malta.
This year’s St Augustine Lecture was held on Campus on Wednesday 29 March 2023, and was entitled “The ‘Book of Creation’: St Augustine and Ecologyâ€. Prof. Eguiarte Bendimez analysed various texts by Augustine of Hippo that deal with God’s work in creation and the beauty which this contains. He also delved into issues linked to the moral duty of every human person to respect and care for ecology. A discussion among the attendees was afterwards chaired by from the Faculty of Theology.
On Thursday 30 March, Prof. Eguiarte Bendimez addressed another public lecture on “The role of De Catechizandis Rudibus within the process of a Christian programme in Hippo.†A number of details from Augustine’s treatise were explored, showing important steps that were introduced and followed by Augustine in his catechetical programme in the early 5th century. The lecture also highlighted comparisons and contrasts between the programme followed at Hippo and the programme followed in Milan, where Augustine was a catechumen in the late 4th century. Afterwards, a discussion was chaired by , Head of Department of Church History, Patrology and Palaeochristian Archaeology. The public lecture was held at the Augustinian Institute in St Julian's.
