Island universities have much in common.
and were welcomed today by Prof. Mutsumi Nishida, President, and the top management team at the University of the Ryukyus (UR), Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. During the week, the Baldacchinos will discuss further collaborations in island studies education and research. Both the University of Malta and UR are members of RETI: the network of island universities.
Okinawa is considered Japan's only island prefecture. The island chain is also the main site for US military bases stationed here on the request of the Government of Japan.
The University of the Ryukyus has 8,000 students in 7 faculties. It also contains the Research Institute on Islands and Sustainability, which promotes island-island collaborations and inductive island research.
